Watch Out for the Curves! Keep Moving with the Online Business Journey!

Now is the time to proceed with telling you about my online business journey. I crossed the starting line and I am on my way! Previously, I mentioned that I listened to Dean Holland’s book, The Iceberg Effect. Inspired by his story, I decided to purchase his mini-course called the Quick Start Challenge to see if creating an online business was a good fit.

Due to important family issues and other personal reasons, completing the QSC took me longer than I had originally anticipated. As I made my way through each step, I was faced with a few curves. The fear of failure crossed my mind. What was I doing? Can this be done? What if I fail?

This was a completely new beginning for me. I have never done affiliate marketing before. Some days the emotions felt overwhelming. But yet, I was driven by curiosity to find out more about what it takes for an online business. Looking back, I am glad that I kept moving forward on this journey!

I would remind myself of my WHY. This seems so simple, but it is also so deeply rooted to ignite the drive to learn and succeed in anything you choose to do! Make sure to stay focused on your WHY and continue to have a growth mindset!

Proceed with Learning Something New!

This mini-course was so helpful! The guided videos were hands-on Step-by-Step instructions for any level of online business knowledge. Thank goodness, since I was a complete beginner! It is a Watch, Pause, Try, Repeat, if necessary, type of learning. Along with the detailed videos, there is access to ask the mentors any questions and receive quick turn-around personal responses.

Oh yes, I steadily asked questions while completing the lessons. There were no time limits. This course is set up to work on your schedule. Submit questions when you need clarification. I am very pleased with the quality that I received from the QSC. The guidance and learning that transpired were well worth the minimal educational cost!

Within the course, there were also several guided steps for getting Tools and Assets for an online business.

Please note: Everything that I mention on this blog is based on information that I learned from online resources, my own experience, etc. Please do your own research before making any important decisions.  You and only you are responsible for any and all digital marketing business decisions that you make.

Tools and Assets for an Online Business

Asking questions and getting personal responses allowed me to get a feel for how helpful this course’s mentors are. When you create an online business, there are several things that you need to acquire and learn. Some of the first business essentials purchased are:

A Domain Name

The first thing you need is a domain name. A domain name will allow you to create your own website. Keep it simple. Don’t choose a name that is too limiting if you are not sure exactly what your business will be. There are many domain name websites on the internet. With the guidance of my mentor, I chose NameCheap to buy my domain name.

A Hosting Platform

After purchasing a domain name, you require an online service that enables you to publish your website files on the internet. There are various hosting services available online, and it is important to take your time searching and reviewing what each one offers for their subscription prices. Hosting platforms keep adding new features, so it is essential to stay updated. The best thing about online business tools is the flexibility of subscription options.

In case you’re wondering, I followed the tutorials, explored options on my own, and decided to subscribe to Builderall. It’s an amazing marketing suite!

Email Autoresponder

Continuing with the Quick Start Challenge, my next focus was learning about Email Marketing Basics. This part of the course showed how to create a business email with your domain name, how to create a list for your lead magnet opt-ins, how to set up automated follow-up email sequences, how to schedule them, and how to create broadcast emails. This was a great hands-on, beginner-friendly, set of tasks that piqued my curiosity for learning even more about online business technology!

This is where my subscription to Builderall came into action!

Within Builderall, I created my list-building pages, connected my domain name, and activated my autoresponder which includes everything recently mentioned for email marketing.

Learning Curves!

Yikes! I need a business address! While creating my business email sequence, this course lesson mentioned that you should not use your personal address. This advice makes sense.

Why? At the footer of each email is placed your business name, address, and website URL. All marketing emails need this information posted for legal reasons. With the hopes of an expanding business, you really don’t want your home address being sent to thousands of people!

Fail Forward – Keep Moving!

Here I am, inspired by my progress in the QSC training as a complete newbie to online business undertakings and have reached the part of needing a business address. I turned to what I knew at the time and secured a PO Box. Which is all well and good, but then came a stark reality that this rental wouldn’t work for me.

You see, at this moment in time, I didn’t quite know all the ins and outs of creating and succeeding with an online business, I decided to take a timely detour, another curve so to speak, and search about whether I should register my business as an LLC. This may sound farfetched to some, but to me, it seemed like a good learning investment of my time and while thinking ahead to the what ifs about business finances. That is when I discovered that for me, a PO Box was not allowed as a business address on my LLC application. Failing forward to keep moving on my journey, I had to search and figure this out.

Yes, it was a timely delay in my Quick Start Challenge course as I educated myself on the fine print of how to register for an LLC. Through research, I acquired an acceptable business address and registered my LLC. Although it took a bit of time, this added peace of mind for my journey, From Teacher to Online Entrepreneur – The Next Chapter.

Please do not take this as financial or legal advice. I am only documenting what I did on my personal journey. You are responsible for your actions with your business plans.

In Conclusion

When learning how to create and build your own online business, it is important not to be afraid of failure. You only fail when you quit! Any curves or obstacles that you encounter should be seen as learning opportunities along your path.

Give yourself time to learn and apply the necessary skills needed to construct a firm foundation. Don’t be afraid to Watch, Pause, Try, and Repeat as many times as necessary.

An essential resource is having a great detailed course with lesson videos and available communication with mentors for questions that may arise, especially for a beginner to keep moving on your online business journey! Learn from others who have been there – done that!

There are Tools and Assets for an online business – Your own Domain Name, Hosting, and Setting up an Autoresponder, to name a few. Shop wisely! Check the package details when comparison shopping!

Stay positive while learning something new and navigating the curves to acquire the knowledge needed to keep moving on your online business journey!

  2. HI, I am interested when you say

“… and have reached the part of needing a business address. ”

thanks for this, you are not the first person to tell me not to use my home address, but I still don’t understand why not. What is it that I should be aware of?

    1. Hi Tony!
Thank you for visiting my post. It is my understanding from the research that I’ve done so far, that using your home address is a privacy issue to consider. If you are considering using an autoresponder for email marketing, your address is automatically sent to any person who opts into your lead magnet.
I look forward to future communications with you, Tony!
      All the best!

  3. Milissa, hey how are you? Well done your progress is really good. I like how you did the Quickstart challenge because I also did that. I found it incredibly useful and it built on the detail from what Dean talks about in the iceberg effect book. I see each of these stages as a steppingstone to the next stage until we get to a point where everything clicks together, and you start to earn commissions. Well done. Talk soon. Thanks, Atif

    1. Hi Atif!
Thank you for reading my post. It is nice to hear positive feedback from an affiliate marketer who is ahead of me in this business venture. I appreciate your communications and hope to stay in touch with future business updates.
      All the best!

  4. I love the part where you share about renting a PO Box. At first, it seems that the problem is solved.

Then you started thinking that maybe you should register a LLC. Then the problem that was initially solved is now a problem again. You cannot use the PO Box.

Now, you have to look for a new solution.

This really helps to show people the reality of starting an online business, that you will encounter new problems from time to time but there will always be a solution when you take the time to figure it out.

  5. Hi Milissa,
This affiliate marketing option is great is it not? 🙂
I love that you can do it at your own pace, as you mentioned sometimes life happens and we can’t do as much in our affiliate training. You’ve come a long way and I comment\d you on that! You are able to share a lot about starting and affiliate business!
All the best and until your next post!
    Denny
